What happened: On February 28th, the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran, targeting cities across the country and calling for regime change. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the first wave. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was named successor on March 8th.

Where it stands: Iran has responded with widespread missile and drone attacks on US bases across Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, the UAE, and Kuwait. Thirteen US service members have been killed. Iran has also been accused of targeting oil and gas facilities, shipping lanes, and civilian sites.

Why it matters:

Debt is not your friend!

Friends and family often come to me for personal finance advice. While I’m flattered, I hesitate to present myself as any kind of expert.

What I’ve noticed, however, is that the friends most anxious about money are often buried in debt. Credit card debt is the most common—and the most dangerous. Then come car loans, which only add to the financial strain (we’ve already covered how costly car ownership can be). Student loans are especially punishing.

Debt grows fast and steals your financial freedom. If you're feeling overwhelmed, start with the most expensive debt—usually credit cards and pay off what you can, one step at a time. Your finances become much clearer the moment you do.

At the very least, don’t go into debt using buy-now-pay-later services just to order food from Doordash.

Calm Before the Storm

The United States has, temporarily, hit pause on its economic sparring with China. A 90-day hiatus on new tariffs has been declared, while Canada has taken steps to drop its own. But don’t let the calm fool you. We’re in the early stages of a global economic reshuffle.

To understand what’s happening, we need to look at the core issue: America’s trade deficit.

For decades, the U.S. has imported far more than it exports. While this gave Americans access to cheaper goods, it’s also allowed foreign powers to accumulate massive reserves of U.S. dollars—usually parked in Treasuries, stocks, real estate, and farmland. That foreign capital has helped inflate asset prices and deepen the wealth divide, further exacerbating economic vulnerabilities.

Enter the Triffin Dilemma—the idea that in order to supply the world with dollars (as the global reserve currency), the U.S. must run persistent deficits. But in doing so, it weakens its own domestic economy. Over time, this has chipped away at American manufacturing and self-sufficiency, creating what many now consider a national security threat.
